In addition to the foregoing, for the past

6 years, the firm of Messrs. Denison, Ram and Gibbs has had

the supervision under the Director of Public Works of the new

Kowloon Water Works, which are now nearing completion at an

estimated cost of £115,000.

The Principal Land Surveyor, assisted by 5

Surveyors, deals with all applications for land or for piers,

conducts land sales, prepares lease plans and fixes boundary

stones.

He also prepares schemes for the laying out of new

districts. There are no reliable general surveys of the Colony

and the features of the country are constantly undergoing much

alteration owing to the formation of roads, the cutting away of

hills and the carrying out of reclamation schemes. A vast amount

of survey work is entailed by the extensive changes resulting

from such works.

I will not refer to the Clerical, Accounting

and Stores Branches, which are extensive and important, the

stores alone being of the value of about $270,000 (say £25,000).

With regard to Public Works, the Executive

Engineers are held responsible for the various works committed

to their charge. They have to prepare the drawings, estimates
